The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) and the Uganda Mathematical Society (UMS) co-hosted the 51st Annual National Mathematics Contest on 1 August 2026 at Makerere University.
Organised under the theme Competence-Based Mathematics, the contest attracted 612 schools and 31,743 participants from across the country, reaffirming the growing importance of mathematics in shaping Uganda's future workforce.
Representing ICPAU, David Okongo - Business Development Officer, reiterated the Institute's commitment to promoting competence-based learning, numeracy and analytical skills among young people. He noted that Mathematics remains a foundational subject for the accounting profession and commended the Uganda Mathematical Society for its efforts to nurture mathematical excellence.
"One of the core subjects required to become an accountant is Mathematics. The Institute is therefore proud to be associated with Mathematics educators and learners in an initiative to improve and promote the subject," said Okongo.
The Uganda Mathematical Society serves as the umbrella body for Mathematics educators in Uganda, providing a platform for teachers to exchange knowledge, share innovative teaching approaches and collaborate to strengthen Mathematics education. Through initiatives such as the National Mathematics Contest, the Society continues to inspire learners while supporting teachers to improve Mathematics instruction across the country.
The Chief Guest, Pastor Jackson Senyonga, applauded the learners for their discipline, commitment and determination to excel. Congratulating the winners, he encouraged them to view their achievement as the beginning of even greater aspirations.
"I congratulate the winners of this year's contest. Your early morning and late-night preparations have paid off, and you have brought pride to both your parents and teachers. This moment proves that excellence is attainable and it is a call for you to dream with determination and pursue your goals with purpose," said Senyonga.
Among the outstanding achievers were Nantale Marshel from Leos Junior School Masaka, Bukenya Ethan from St Marcelino Junior School, Wanyoto Lucky and Kizito Cleophas from King’s College Budo, and Odit Andrew from Wampewo Ntake SS.
The annual contest continues to provide a valuable platform for identifying and nurturing mathematical talent, while encouraging learners to develop the analytical and problem-solving skills that are increasingly vital for Uganda's social and economic transformation.
