The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among has urged accountants to create impactful legacies through embracing relevance in a rapidly changing world.

“Sustainable impact involves doing things that people can remember you for, generations afterwards,” said Among in a message delivered on her behalf by CPA Hon. Faith Nakut.

The Speaker was speaking during the 30th ICPAU Annual Seminar  taking place at the Imperial Resort Beach Hotel and online, from 3 – 5 September 2025.

She challenged accountants to be creators of solutions and agents of change, through continuous learning and adaptability.

Among further noted that sustainability reporting in Uganda has not yet received the attention it deserves and urged professionals to take on extraordinary assignments that demonstrate their value to society.

“I would blame it on laziness and procrastination. Otherwise, accountants can remain relevant to their societies and countries by being ethical and intentional leaders,” remarked Among.

She encouraged accountants to define sustainability at a personal level, so that they can derive meaning from it and apply it in their everyday practice.

This year’s seminar also carried a celebratory theme, marking 30 years since the first ICPAU Annual Seminar in 1996. From only 46 participants at inception, the seminar has grown to attract more than 1,700 participants today.

CPA George Egaddu, the 1st President of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU), reflected on the journey of the Annual Seminar.

“The purpose and focus of the seminar is the same today as it was in 1996. Participants gather to learn, exchange ideas, and ask questions in pursuit of personal and professional growth. There is also the added advantage of meeting new people and building lasting connections,” Egaddu recounted.

The three decades of growth, he noted, were a testament to the brilliance, resilience, and teamwork of the accountancy profession.

Held under the theme Positioning Professionals for Sustainable Impact, the 30th Annual Seminar continues to provide an immersive learning experience for accountants, away from the day-to-day demands of work.

The event is organised by ICPAU in partnership with Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited, Deposit Protection Fund, KPMG, Bank of Uganda, National Social Security Fund, National Identification and Registration Authority, PKF, Standard Chartered Bank, Uganda Communications Commission, NCBA Bank, Financial Intelligence Authority, Centenary Bank, Civil Aviation Authority, Uganda National Oil Company, Stanbic Bank, KCCA, Wazalendo SACCO and Wazalendo Investments, East Africa Development Bank, among other partners.
