The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) has continued to rally members, students, and the wider public to recognise excellence in the profession through the forthcoming 10th Accountancy Service Awards (ASA). This was during a Twitter Space discussion hosted by Eric Zachary Mugisha, a communications and marketing consultant, featuring an engaging panel of distinguished accountants.
The session brought together:
- CPA Alfred Beitwababo Kabuchu, Vice President, Council, ICPAU
- CPA Rehema Nakirembe, Member, Events Management Committee, ICPAU
- Lydia Tusiime, Business Development Manager, ICPAU
- CPA Christine Mugume, Council Member and Chair of the Women in Accountancy Forum, ICPAU
The discussion explored the history, significance, and future of the ASA, which is celebrating a decade of honouring professional excellence.
A Celebration of Impact
In his remarks, CPA Alfred Kabuchu emphasised the importance of the awards as a platform to recognise accountants’ contributions to businesses and society.
“Every organization that handles money requires an accountant. We don’t just balance books; we create impact in every sector of the economy,” he said.
He highlighted that with over 4,500 members and more than 20,000 students, ICPAU has established the awards to recognise outstanding individuals, firms, and institutions whose work continues to strengthen Uganda’s economy.
Why the Awards Stand Alone
CPA Rehema Nakirembe noted that while the awards initially formed part of the Annual Seminar, they now stand as a standalone gala event.
“We wanted the awards to shine on their own. Excellence deserves undivided attention, and separating the ASA has given them greater prominence,” she explained.
She further pointed out the introduction of new categories such as the Institutional Partner of the Year, Accountancy Firm of the Year, and the Humanitarian Award, which highlight excellence across a broader ecosystem.
The Spirit of Recognition
Lydia Tusiime traced the origins of the awards, noting that recognition was the best way to reward professional excellence.
“There is no better reward than recognizing someone’s hard work. Over 10 years, the awards have evolved to reflect the growth of the profession and the economy,” she said.
She also encouraged members, students, and the public to nominate outstanding colleagues and institutions through the ICPAU website before the nomination period closed.
Spotlight on Women in the Profession
Council Member and Chair of the Women in Accountancy Forum, CPA Christine Mugume, highlighted the significance of the Women CPA of the Year Award.
“This award is a statement of inclusivity and gender equity. It inspires young women to break barriers in a profession that was traditionally male-dominated,” she noted.
She called on female accountants to nominate and uplift one another, stressing the importance of building a legacy for the next generation.
Looking Ahead: The 10th Edition.
The 10th ASA will be held as a glamorous standalone gala dinner on 3rd October 2025 at Sheraton Kampala Hotel. The ceremony will feature eight award categories, networking opportunities, and live entertainment.
In his closing remarks, CPA Kabuchu called on members, students, and corporate Uganda to actively participate through nominations, sponsorships, and attendance.
“Together, we can continue to raise the bar of excellence and demonstrate the true impact of accountants on society,” he said.
